Writing is a form of communication. It is an essential skill that can be used in a variety of professions. Good writing skills are important for students, employees, and business people. There are many reasons to improve your writing skills.

One way to improve your writing skills is to use a sentence structure checker. A sentence structure checker can help you to improve your writing by checking your sentence structure. A sentence structure checker will point out common mistakes in sentence structure that can affect the clarity of your intended message.

There are many different types of sentences that one needs to know how to construct properly for effective written expression. There are at least five basic kinds of sentences: simple, compound, complex, compound-complex, and compound-complex perfect (or emphatic).

Simple sentences contain one subject and its corresponding verb. For example: “I want to go out tonight.”

Complex sentences contain an independent clause (or main clause) along with one or more dependent clauses. Dependent clauses cannot stand alone as a sentence. They need to be connected to an independent clause. For example: “When I get home tonight” is a dependent clause, since it cannot stand alone as a sentence.

The following sentences contain dependent clauses that are not properly connected with the main (independent) clauses: “Being sick I stayed home”.

For this kind of sentence, “When” is the subordinating conjunction that should be used; thus: “When I get home tonight, I will take a nap”.

Note that “when” signals time. Other common subordinating conjunctions include “because”, “since”, “although”, and others.

These words introduce dependent (subordinate) clauses.

Compound sentences are two or more simple sentences (or independent clauses) connected by a coordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunctions include “and”, “but”, “for”, “nor”, “our”, and “so”. For example, I want to go out tonight, but I don’t have any money.

Compound-complex sentences contain one dependent clause and two or more independent clauses connected by one or more conjunctions. For example: “When I get home tonight, if it’s not too late, I will take a nap”
